Watch: Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 cabin ceiling collapses during emergency in Iran

A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 operating from Mashhad to Kermanshah in Iran was forced to make an emergency landing in Mashhad on Tuesday after losing one of the tyres on its landing gear shortly after takeoff. During the landing, sections of the cabin ceiling came down, Brazilian news outlet UOL reported, citing Iran’s Razavi Khorasan provincial government.

A video released by Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar showed the cabin ceiling lining falling onto passengers during the landing, with sections of the aircraft’s internal structure left exposed. UOL reported that no passengers were injured and that everyone was safely evacuated from the aircraft.

The aircraft had developed a problem shortly after takeoff and returned to Mashhad after the pilots declared an emergency. R7, another Brazilian news outlet, reported that initial accounts said a tyre may have burst during the takeoff roll, but added that this had not been confirmed. It also said the precise nature of the technical problem had not immediately been disclosed.

According to UOL, Sepehran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari, citing Iran’s state-run Fars news agency, said passengers disembarked safely and were transferred to another flight to Kermanshah. The runway at Mashhad airport was temporarily closed for assessment before reopening later in the day.

The incident occurred at around 5:39 pm local time, according to information released by the Razavi Khorasan provincial government and reported by UOL.

The latest incident comes after another Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737-500 accident at Mashhad on August 25.

According to international aviation incident database AeroInside, a Sepehran Boeing 737-500 operating flight IS-4310 from Tehran to Mashhad, with 127 people aboard, veered off the runway after landing and stopped with its nose landing gear collapsed. Passengers and crew were reported safe, and Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization opened an investigation.

Airportia, citing the Aviation Herald, also reported that the aircraft, registration EP-FSF, left runway 13L and came to a stop on runway 13R after the nose gear collapsed.
