CCTV At Pharmacies? Centre Proposes Surveillance For Prescription Drug Sales

Wholesale drug dealers have been excluded from the proposed CCTV requirement.
Prescription drug sales at pharmacies and other licensed retail premises may soon come under CCTV surveillance, with the Union Health Ministry proposing an amendment to the Drugs Rules, 1945 to strengthen monitoring of prescription-based medicines.
According to a draft notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on September 8, 2026, the supply of any drug made on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner, except through wholesale dealing, would have to take place under a CCTV surveillance system installed and maintained at the licensed premises.
