Reddit co-founder questions tech industry’s silence on explaining AI risks: Report

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian says the tech industry has been “tone deaf” in explaining AI risks, calling for more meaningful public discussion around the technology’s potential dangers.
Adding to the AI fever pitch, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has said that the tech industry has been “tone deaf” in explaining AI and properly informing the public about the real risks. Alexis Ohanian has raised his voice for debates to be centred around more substantive risks to AI rather than the issues that can be used to score political points.
He further told CNBC that the public needs to be informed about navigating the technology. He added that the tech industry has contributed to the problem by doing a “pretty tone deaf job” of explaining AI and the repercussions it can lead to.
He further raised questions about the sudden alarm that has been raised by tech leaders and the spotlight on the importance of these risks in light of a failure to explain AI. He Drew parallels between the warnings and a cinematic idea of apocalypse we see in Terminator with advanced AI Skynet, highlighting the importance of knowledge
His comments come days after warnings from researchers at AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic raised caution about the rapid advancement of recursive self-improvement technology. RSI refers to AI systems helping develop more advanced models, potentially creating a cycle in which increasingly capable systems contribute to building even more capable ones. The concern here is that if the AI systems take over the process of training new models, their human developers could eventually lose control over how those systems have evolved.
As per Ohanian, AI has real consequences, and “Terminator”-style warnings can distract from real concerns such as agent swarms, where multiple agents work together to perform a complicated task. Highlighting the grave danger these things can lead to, he compared AI to nuclear energy because both technologies are powerful scientific advances that can cause serious harm and are capable of delivering major benefits if managed properly.
Ohanian further told CNBC that there should be better discussion and coverage on the real threats and critiques the dissemination of misinformation regarding AI.
All this comes after Jacob Coxon accused Anthropic and OpenAI of acting irresponsibly when it comes to the development of AI. He posted on social media about how concerned he was with Anthropic and OpenAI gambling with our lives and added that people building AI “earnestly believe that it can kill us by the end of the decade.”
