US willing to discuss ‘shared AI risks’ with China amid growing concerns over the future of AI: Report

The US and China are set to discuss AI safety cooperation alongside trade, rare earth minerals, and other economic issues in upcoming talks in New York.

The US has showcased a willingness to discuss burgeoning AI threats with China in the upcoming AI talks this weekend. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has scheduled a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to provide an opening for talks on US-China AI safety cooperation, as per Axios.

The report suggests that the upcoming meeting would be a multi-hour meeting in New York City, and it would focus on AI trade, rare earth minerals, and other economic issues. These talks would build on previous issues and discussions.

Presidential outlook towards China in the AI war

Just a few days back, President Donald Trump had downplayed the need for his administration to check the development of Artificial Intelligence. His main worry at the time was about losing the edge the US has in AI technology to China and trailing behind it. He has acknowledged the need for some regulation and offered no specific oversight into the tech dynamic, which is moving a little too quickly.

On Monday, President Donald Trump slammed Anthropic in a Truth Social post. He further added that “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX.” The concerns raised by AI leaders that the developing technology could lead to destructive behaviour is a claim that Trump has rejected in a series of heated social media posts, and he claimed to be a hoax buster.

Trump’s post conveyed the idea that the administration has already stopped the AI company Anthropic “FROM DOING BAD, OR POTENTIALLY BAD THINGS.” In the aftermath of the post, Trump did meet Altman on the sidelines of the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, as per reports. Trump has had support from Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, who describes the risks of AI as overblown.
