UK rents rise at fastest pace this year as housing costs remain elevated

Average private rents across Britain rose at their fastest pace this year in August, adding to the pressure on households facing elevated housing costs, according to official data released on Wednesday.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed average private rents increased 3.8 per cent year-on-year in August, up from a 3.7 per cent rise recorded in July. The latest increase was the strongest since December.

The acceleration in rental inflation comes as housing affordability remains a key concern for households across Britain. Higher rents can add to living costs and put pressure on household budgets, particularly for tenants in major urban centres where rental demand remains strong.

Meanwhile, the ONS data showed a moderation in annual house price inflation. House prices rose 1.4 per cent year-on-year in July, slowing from a 1.5 per cent increase in June.

The contrasting movements in rents and house prices highlight continued changes in Britain's housing market. While rental costs accelerated in August, the pace of house price growth softened in July.

The latest figures will be closely watched by economists and policymakers as they assess broader inflationary pressures in the British economy. Housing costs form an important component of household spending and can influence the outlook for consumer prices.
