The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to host the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction in India, ending the practice of the event happening overseas on Tuesday.

Since 2024, the IPL auction has travelled to international locations such as Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. Fans have shown up for the event as intense bidding takes place for players who are up for grabs in the auction.

The move was seen as a strategic shift rather than a one-off experiment, but it looks like BCCI/IPL is bringing the event back to India this year.

IPL 2027 mini auction to be held in India

According to Cricbuzz, bringing the auction back to India was one of the key decisions made during the IPL governing council meeting, which was held on September 15. The upcoming event would be a mini-auction, while the mega auction next year could once again take place overseas.

Reports added that the decision aligned with the assurance given to franchises, who had raised concerns regarding logistical and operational challenges of sending team delegations overseas for a mini-auction. This is why the IPL's governing council opted to explore an Indian city as host for this year's event.

Venue yet to be announced for mini auction

While it has been confirmed that the mini‑auction will be held in India, the venue is yet to be finalised. The choice will depend on the availability of adequate accommodation for franchises and their delegations.

For the mini-auction, the BCCI/IPL requires over a hundred rooms for a couple of nights during peak wedding season to meet the requirements.

Meanwhile, the IPL governing council made an open-ended decision on the Impact Player rule. The board has invited feedback on the rule, with a final decision set to be taken at the next GC meeting.
