Bengaluru: Man throws acid on wife, attacks with machete
Bengaluru, Sep 17 (PTI) A man allegedly threw acid at his 26-year-old wife and brutally attacked her with a machete multiple times near J P Nagar here on Thursday, police said.
The woman’s condition, who reportedly hails from West Bengal and worked as a nurse at a private clinic here, is critical. She is undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital, police sources said.
According to police, the incident happened around 9:15 am when the woman came out of the clinic in J P Nagar third phase to get breakfast.
The man allegedly threw floor cleaner acid (which is being ascertained) at her and chased her. He caught her near the basement entrance and attacked her with a machete multiple times.
Traffic Police personnel nearby, upon learning of the incident, rushed to the spot and took the man into custody. Police are questioning him.
In a purported video of the alleged incident, a man wearing a helmet can be seen attacking the woman multiple times with what appears to be a machete. Some people gathered at the scene are seen recording the incident on their mobile phones while a couple of them try to intervene and stop the attack.
Police said people probably feared the man attacking them with the machete and hesitated to immediately go near to rescue the woman.
According to preliminary information, the couple had been staying separately for some time now due to differences, they said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
“The couple was not living together. The woman lived in a PG here while working as a nurse, and the man (husband) worked at an oil and gas company in Chennai,” a senior official said.
Later, speaking to reporters, K Vamsi Krishna, DCP Bangalore South said, “He attacked her with two weapons, and apparently there was some liquid similar to acid. Our Scene of crime officers (SOCOs) team had visited the spot and collected samples. The woman is admitted to the hospital, and her condition is critical as of now.” “We are verifying the acid’s nature, whether it is industrial or domestic use. After receiving the SOCO report, we will investigate this further. We are continuing the investigation,” he said.
According to the DCP, the couple married in 2024 in Madurai (Tamil Nadu), and preliminarily police suspect a marital dispute between them. “Apparently he (the accused) travelled yesterday on a two-wheeler from Madurai.” Traffic Sub-Inspector and his staff did a good job securing the accused, he said; the public was also trying to stop the incident.
