PM Modi opens Semicon 2026, says India's semiconductor ecosystem is on the rise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Semicon 2026, today. During his speech, he highlights that India's semiconductor ecosystem is expanding rapidly. It is opening new opportunities for innovation, investment and growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi on Thursday, bringing together semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers and start-ups as India seeks to expand its presence across an increasingly important technology supply chain.

The fifth edition of the industry gathering is being held at Yashobhoomi and runs through September 19. Organised jointly by the India Semiconductor Mission, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and SEMI, the global industry association for the semiconductor and electronics sector, the event is centred on the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”.

Addressing the event, PM Modi states, "India's semiconductor ecosystem is expanding rapidly. It is opening new opportunities for innovation, investment and growth. It is opening new opportunities for innovation, investment and growth." To put in number, he said that the nation has achieved 7.8 per cent growth, even in challenging times.

During the event, he said, "Due to the AI development, the semiconductor industry is facing new questions. In the last 2 decades, global semiconductor's market growth has been recorded over 20 per cent. And AI demand plays a huge role in this growth."

He added that the challenge is not just to know what is happening inside the processors, but also around it. "India is preparing to solve these challenges," PM Modi said.

He also spoke about the AI security and how India is coping up with it. "For this, in last 10 years, India's installed solar capacity has increased from 2GW to above 160GW. The country is also progressing in the nuclear energy sector and is working on the small modular reactor."

India is stepping up to take all the chances that will make the country a preferred semiconductor destination, he concludes.

For the Semicon 2026, over 600 exhibitors, including about 300 international companies are participants.

The conference agenda covers artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging, chip design, materials and equipment, supply-chain resilience, research and development and workforce development. Discussions come as governments and companies worldwide seek more diversified sources of semiconductor production and technology.
