‘Meri Degree Ka Kya’: Congress marks Modi’s birthday with an ultimatum & pan-India campaign
Indian Youth Congress has threatened to surround Prime Minister’s official residence if all vacant government posts are not filled by Modi’s next birthday (17 September, 2027).
New Delhi: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has picked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday to launch a nationwide campaign: “Meri Degree Ka Kya”.
The youth wing of the Congress has put the central government on notice, threatening to surround the Prime Minister’s official residence (7, Lok Kalyan Marg) if all vacant government posts are not filled by 17 September next year. It has also demanded that the government issue and stick to a recruitment calendar for every vacant post with clear deadlines for the entire process, from recruitment exams to final appointments.
“The youth of our country are distressed by severe unemployment, and the lack of jobs has left them frustrated. Jobs in the private sector are continuously shrinking, yet despite more than 50,05,850 vacant sanctioned posts in government sectors across the country, the government refuses to conduct recruitment drives. Filling these 50 lakh vacant sanctioned posts will not only employ our youth but also fundamentally improve public services like schools and hospitals,” Akshay Lakra, president of the Delhi Youth Congress, said Thursday.
The Youth Congress leader, at a press conference, also raised questions over jobs promised by the BJP-led government at the Centre.
“The Prime Minister, who promised 2 crore jobs every year, is today unable to even fill 50 lakh vacant positions. This raises the question: when crores of youth are qualified, why do these posts remain vacant?” the IYC said in a press statement.
The Youth Congress has also announced that it will launch a nationwide campaign to demand that the vacant government posts are filled.
“If necessary, we will besiege the chief ministers’ offices and the Prime Minister’s residence. Through programs like ‘Job Marches’ and ‘Degree Marches’, youth will be mobilised and made aware of this mission,” the IYC said.
The Youth Congress also hit out at the Prime Minister over the issue of his degree, saying young Indians are running from pillar to post for jobs despite holding multiple degrees.
“An ordinary family cuts back on meals and takes on debt to pay their children’s fees, hoping that these degrees will secure their future and support them in old age. However, the degrees that were once a source of pride have today become a symbol of the BJP government’s failure. Whether it is a student studying tirelessly through the night in a library or a young person dreaming of supporting their family, everyone feels cheated,” the IYC said.
Adding, “This is not merely a question of unemployment. This is a question of the future of the nation’s youth. We do not seek confrontation with the government. We demand accountability and transparency from the government.”
