Gurugram hit-and-run: Driver Kalyan Bainsla, friends were drunk, returning from party, say cops

SIT sources said Kalyan Bainsla chased Sia on Golf Course Road before hitting her motorcycle. The viral video has intensified scrutiny of rash driving, the role of the other occupants and women bikers' safety.

Kalyan Bainsla, his cousin and two friends had been partying and drinking through the night before he rammed his car into a woman biker in Gurugram, according to sources in the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

At the time of the hit-and-run incident, which took place on Golf Course Road on Sunday, Bainsla, 33, was driving a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, with his cousin Lavnish, 34, seated in the front passenger seat. Both are currently in jail.

The SIT found that Bainsla, a gym owner, first encountered Sia near the Sector 53 Metro station. Following an altercation, he allegedly began chasing her motorcycle after being instigated by Lavnish.

He chased her for at least 2 km at high speed before the car hit her motorcycle.

The collision was captured on an action camera mounted on Sia's superbike. The footage subsequently went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage against rash driving and the safety of women bikers.

Gurugram Police have served notices to the other two men who were travelling in the vehicle. Their statements will be recorded by the SIT, following which a decision on their arrest will be taken, the sources said.

Blood and urine samples of Bainsla have been sent for testing, and the reports are awaited.

Bainsla and Lavnish were arrested in Rajasthan on Tuesday.

Police said that after his arrest, Bainsla tried to escape custody on the pretext of urinating, but fell and was injured. He was later given first aid at a hospital.

Meanwhile, Sia has called for the arrest of the two other men as well, saying that if they weren't punished, then "such incidents will continue to happen."
