UP woman jumps into Ganga after husband refuses treatment money, rescued 40 km away
After a dispute with her husband over treatment expenses, a Mirzapur woman jumped into the Ganga and was rescued in Chunar the next morning. Police said she is safe, while her family and officers are piecing together the events behind the incident.
A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur was rescued around 12 hours after she jumped into the Ganga following a dispute with her husband over money for her medical treatment.
Boatmen rescued Sunita Devi in Chunar, around 40 kilometres downstream from Shastri Bridge, where she had jumped into the river.
The incident took place in the Katara Kotwali police station area of Lohia Talab Chhoti Basahi.
According to the family, Sunita had called her husband Suraj, who works in Gujarat, on September 15 and asked him for money for her treatment.
During the phone conversation, Suraj reportedly refused to send money and asked Sunita to speak to his mother instead. A dispute followed between the couple, after which Sunita left home.
At around 5 pm, she reached Shastri Bridge and jumped into the Ganga. Her family members waited for her to return but became worried when she did not come home for several hours. They subsequently began searching for her but could not locate her during the night.
The following morning, at around 5 am, boatmen in Chunar spotted Sunita being carried by the current in the river. They rescued her from the water and informed her family. She was later taken to her maternal home, where she is currently staying.
Sunita’s son Rahul said his parents had spoken over the phone before the incident and had an argument. He said his mother took the step following the dispute.
Sunita’s mother-in-law, Birenji Devi, said the family had been arranging money for her treatment. She said Suraj had asked that Sunita speak to his mother after telling her that he did not have money to give her.
“Her husband said, ‘Let me speak to my mother.’ We were arranging money for her treatment. She jumped at around 5 pm and was found at around 5 am,” Birenji Devi said.
The woman’s four children are currently at home and waiting for their mother, according to the family.
Katara Kotwali Station House Officer Neeraj Pathak confirmed that the woman had jumped into the Ganga and said she is now safe. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being ascertained.
