If you love my son, hang yourself: Boyfriend’s mother jailed after Ahmedabad teen’s suicide

An Ahmedabad woman has been arrested after police said she allegedly harassed her son's 17-year-old girlfriend over their relationship. The case centres on the girl's August 31 death in Sarkhej, with police examining audio and CCTV evidence.
A woman has been arrested in Ahmedabad for allegedly harassing her son's 17-year-old girlfriend and telling her to hang herself if she truly loved him, police said.
The case relates to the suicide of a Class 12 student in Ahmedabad's Sarkhej area on August 31. The girl allegedly died by suicide at her home after being subjected to mental harassment over her relationship with the woman's minor son.
According to the complaint filed by the girl's father, his daughter and the boy were classmates and had been in a relationship. They communicated regularly through phone calls and messages.
The girl's parents learnt about the relationship around three to four months ago. Since both the teenagers were minors, the parents went to the boy's home and advised them to focus on their studies and careers. However, the two teens continued to stay in touch.
The issue resurfaced after the teenagers were seen sitting together on their school's grounds. The school principal subsequently called both families and informed them about the matter.
Police said the boy's mother was angry over the development and later went to the girl's house, where she allegedly confronted the teenager and subjected her to intense mental harassment for around 30 minutes.
According to the girl's father's complaint, the woman allegedly told her, "If you truly love him, hang yourself," and "Hang yourself when no one is home." She is also accused of telling the girl, "I will take care of your parents."
The girl's family told police that she became mentally distressed following the confrontation and subsequently died by suicide at home on August 31.
After her death, the family approached the police and submitted an audio recording of the alleged conversation between the girl and the accused woman. They also handed over CCTV footage purportedly showing the woman visiting their home.
Sarkhej police examined the recordings, CCTV footage and other evidence before registering a case of abetment to suicide against the woman. She was subsequently arrested and sent to jail after the completion of legal procedures.
Police are continuing to investigate the case and are examining the audio recording, CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the probe.
