Jos Buttler Overtakes Rohit Sharma To Become 2nd Highest Run-Scorer In T20Is

Buttler has 4292 runs to his name in 161 T20Is for England whereas Rohit finished his T20I career with 4231 runs in 159 matches for India.

Jos Buttler opened the innings for England in the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 15) and scored 80 runs from 44 balls to help the hosts post a big total of 254/4 in 20 overs. The former England captain added 128 runs off 60 balls for the second wicket with current skipper Harry Brook, who remained unbeaten on 114 off 49 balls.

Buttler’s knock of 80 runs in the first T20I helped him extend his tally of runs to 4,292 in T20Is. He has now gone past Rohit Sharma’s tally of 4,231 runs to become the second-highest run-scorer in the shortest format of the game.

Rohit, who led India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2024, retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, after scoring 4,231 runs in 159 matches. On the other hand, the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Tuesday was Buttler’s 161st T20I for England.

He is now only behind Babar Azam on the list of batters with the most runs in T20Is. Babar, who has previously served as Pakistan’s T20I captain, has 4,596 runs to his name in 145 T20I matches.

Buttler is also second on the list of batters with the most runs in T20 cricket. He has scored 14,970 runs in 527 matches. If he manages to score 30 runs in the next two T20Is against Sri Lanka in front of the home fans this week, he will become the first player in the world to score 15,000 runs in T20 cricket.

As of now, the record for scoring the most runs in T20 cricket is held by former West Indies captain and legendary all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Pollard has amassed a total of 14,999 runs in 754 matches.

As of September 2026, Pakistan's Babar Azam leads the all-time T20I run-scoring charts with 4,596 runs. England's Jos Buttler occupies the second spot with 4,292 runs, having recently overtaken India's Rohit Sharma, who sits in third place with 4,231 runs.
