Pezeshkian hits back at US, Israel over nuclear programme, Hormuz and Gaza

In a world exclusive interview with India Today Group Editor (Foreign Affairs) Geeta Mohan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, addressed the country's bilateral ties with India, regional security, and the country's strategic role within BRICS. Reflecting on discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pezeshkian highlighted India-Iran cultural relations and invited Indian investments in Chabahar Port as a regional transit hub.

Addressing geopolitical tensions, he stated BRICS aims to counter unilateralism and economic sanctions, while reiterating Iran's compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) framework and denying nuclear weapons ambitions. Pezeshkian addressed conflict involving the US and Israel, stating Iran acts in self-defence and criticising military operations in Gaza and Lebanon alongside US sanctions.

He advocated for unity among regional neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, while noting diplomacy stalled after previous agreements were discarded. Additionally, Pezeshkian stated the Strait of Hormuz could remain open under international frameworks if blockades cease, while confirming ongoing diplomatic relations with Russia, China, and India.
