National law school Bengaluru reverses decision to cancel convocation for 2026 batch, CJI to attend

Chief Justice Surya Kant will attend the convocation of the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru on October 17, after the decision to cancel the ceremony was reversed, Bar and Bench reported on Thursday.

On August 27, the university said that it had cancelled the convocation for the batch, originally planned for September 12, citing “unavoidable circumstances”. The decision came amid opposition from more than 700 students and alumni to Kant and Bar Council of India Chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra attending the ceremony.

Students and alumni had objected to Kant’s attendance over his remarks during a hearing on alleged police excesses against protesters in Delhi. They had also opposed the Bar Council’s now-withdrawn directive against students of the National Law University in Hyderabad after they campaigned against the chief justice’s participation in their convocation.

The proposal to hold the event in October was approved by the college’s executive council and general council on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Kant in his capacity as the university’s chancellor, The Hindu reported.

In August, the students from the National Law School of India University had also condemned the Bar Council of India’s now-withdrawn action against the outgoing National Academy of Legal Studies and Research batch and demanded an unconditional apology from the regulatory body.
