Naqvi was present among the dignitaries as India completed a 72-run victory over Sri Lanka. He was seated alongside BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, secretary Devajit Saikia and other officials as India closed in on the title.Once the match ended, the Indian players gathered around head coach Amol Muzumdar, who addressed the squad following their triumph. The team then held its own medal ceremony, with Saikia and Shukla presenting the fielding medal to Nandani Sharma.Saikia also spent time with the players, congratulating them on their title-winning campaign. At the same time, Naqvi was seen interacting with other dignitaries on the field as preparations for the official presentation ceremony got underway.

Naqvi eventually took the stage and presented the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu. After Athapaththu spoke to Farvez Maharoof, the ceremony came to an end. Muzumdar said that it was a decision made by the BCCI and they stand by the call made by the board.The Indian coach said that his team are the champions and that is good enough at the end of the day."That stand has been taken by BCCI and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over. We are the champions. That's good enough. It was on the big board that India champions of Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us.""We are happy that we have turned out to be champions. Now, we look forward to the Asian Games. The fact that we are champions, we are really glad and I am really proud of every single person in this unit. Including the support staff and the players, needless to say," said Muzumdar.He also said that he is unsure if and when the team will get the Asia Cup trophy.NO COMPROMISE FROM BCCI AND NAQVIIndia Today spoke to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who explained that the Indian team had made it clear from the outset that it was not willing to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. However, the BCCI still put forward alternative arrangements to ensure the presentation could take place."The BCCI offered Naqvi that the Asia Cup trophy be handed over to the Indian team by ACC deputy chair Khalid Al Zarooni," Saikia said. "Of course, he turned it down."Saikia said the BCCI then proposed another option, based on the recent practice of having a representative from the winning board present the trophy."As per the recent norm, the representative from the Board which wins the tournament may be allowed to hand over the trophy," he said.However, neither side was willing to compromise. "Naqvi remained adamant and the Indian team too refused to budge and refused to accept the trophy," Saikia said.The standoff ultimately meant that the Asia Cup trophy presentation did not take place as planned.HOW DID NAQVI ACT IN MEN'S ASIA CUP 2025 FINAL?The latest episode comes against the backdrop of the controversy that followed the men's Asia Cup final in September 2025.After India defeated Pakistan to win the title, the Indian team was left waiting for more than an hour before the trophy presentation could take place. India had reportedly requested that the trophy be presented by an Emirates Cricket Board official instead of Naqvi, citing the strained relations between India and Pakistan.Naqvi, however, rejected the request and maintained that the Indian captain would have to collect the trophy from him. The standoff resulted in an unusual end to the presentation, with an ACC official eventually seen removing the trophy while the Indian players waited to take the stage.The Indian team left without receiving the trophy, and the issue remained unresolved, with Naqvi continuing to insist that the Indian captain should collect the silverware directly from him.
