Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit India for the first time in nearly seven years to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, China’s foreign ministry confirmed. The summit will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and September 13.

Xi is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit. The visit comes as India-China ties have improved since 2024, following years of tension over the military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh foreign minister said that Dhaka will not send a government representative to the summit, as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was “not invited”. India has reportedly invited Rahman to attend the summit as chairperson of BIMSTEC and for a bilateral visit. Read on.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to arrest those who burned photographs of religious leader Dhirendra Shastri during protests against his remarks on meat consumption during Durga Puja. Adhikari said that the “saint” had only expressed his views and not imposed them on anyone.

Shastri, the head of the Bageshwar Dham temple, had on Sunday had asked Hindus not to consume “dirty” non-vegetarian food during Durga Puja. He had also said that meat should not be sold near Durga idols during the festival.
