Retreating monsoon continues to wreak havoc in Pithoragarh, Bailey bridge washed away
DEHRADUN: The retreating monsoon continued to batter Uttarakhand’s border district of Pithoragarh, triggering landslides and flash floods that washed away a Bailey bridge and severed road connectivity to three strategically important valleys near the China border.
The 170-foot-long bridge over the swollen Kulagad stream in Dharchula was swept away on Friday night following heavy rain in the higher reaches. Its collapse has cut off the Vyas, Darma and Chaudas valleys from the district and tehsil headquarters.
Police have closed the Dharchula-Tawaghat-Gunji road as a precaution and advised residents and visitors against travelling in heavy, passenger or private vehicles until conditions improve.
