Centre to offer DNA profiling of relatives to identify missing victims in Nepal floods
The Centre has decided to make forensic DNA profiling facilities available in India to help identify the mortal remains of people missing after the devastating flash floods in Nepal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
Under the initiative, first-degree biological relatives of those missing, including parents, children and siblings, residing in India can have their biological samples collected and DNA profiles prepared at Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs), State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs), laboratories of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) and other NABL-accredited facilities with DNA profiling capabilities.
The move follows the procedures outlined by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu for the identification of mortal remains of victims of the August 26 flash floods.
