Nirmala Sitharaman hails M S Subbulakshmi’s genius, discipline on birth anniversary
Bengaluru, Sep 16 (PTI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday described bhakti as the “living soul” of Carnatic music, sustained by a “magnificent confluence of languages” and diverse linguistic and spiritual traditions.
She was speaking at a gathering here to mark the 110th birth anniversary of the legendary musician M S Subbulakshmi.
According to Sitharaman, bhakti, which is at the core of Indian Carnatic music and has also influenced the Hindustani bhajan tradition, emerged in the South and spread to northern parts of the country during the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries.
