Zohran Mamdani is the new darling of NYC developers—a socialist for luxury housing in the city
The shortage of houses has brought a double whammy for NYC residents. It has driven up rents, forcing people to move out. And this affordability crisis led to Zohran Mamdani’s rise.
New Delhi: When New York mayor Zohran Mamdani was campaigning, he had already found a solution to the affordability problem: pressure landlords and court private developers. The socialist mayor wants a housing boom in New York City by wooing developers, a strategy which, in the past, has faced opposition from his DSA ideological counterparts.
During his campaign, Mamdani had said that “the private market in housing construction had a very important role to be played, and one that the city government must facilitate.” And Mamdani went the extra mile to follow through on his statement. In February, he was seen “lobbying Donald Trump” for $ 21 billion of federal funding for Sunnyside Yard, a colossal housing development in Queens.
Contrary, the project had been opposed by the then New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2019. Back then, it was said that such a building “displaces communities of colour and parcels off public land to private real estate developers.”
