Peter Max, the psychedelic pop artist synonymous with 1960s optimism, has died at 88. His colourful work crossed fine art and mass culture, leaving a lasting American imprint.
Peter Max, the artist whose bright, psychedelic pop art came to define the optimism of the 1960s, has died at the age of 88, his son said in a written statement on Wednesday. Max died on Monday, the statement said, without giving a cause.
Known for his swirling, colourful style, Max built a career that stretched far beyond the era of "flower power". His work appeared on everything from postage stamps and posters to a Boeing 777 aircraft and a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, while he also served as the official artist for major events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Indianapolis 500, the World Cup and the World Series.
