NDA security personnel, 46, dies in Pune after gunshot injury
A Defence Security Corps jawan posted at the NDA died in a Pune military hospital days after suffering a gunshot injury in the guard room. Police are probing whether the firing was accidental or self-inflicted, with an accidental death report registered.
A 46-year-old security personnel posted at the National Defence Academy (NDA) died at a military hospital in Pune on Wednesday, five days after he sustained a gunshot injury, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place on September 11 in a guard room on the NDA campus in Khadakwasla. Police said the circumstances that led to the gunshot injury are under investigation, and it is too early to say whether it was an accidental firing or self-inflicted.
A senior police official said the jawan sustained the injury while he was in the guard room and was immediately shifted to the Command Hospital in Wanowrie for treatment. The man, identified as RK Singh, was attached to the Defence Security Corps at the NDA. He died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday, the official said.
According to the official, another sentry on duty at a tower heard the sound of gunfire, came down and found Singh injured. He then informed the control room, after which Singh was taken to the Command Hospital. “The bullet had entered through his neck and exited from the rear side,” the official said.
The post-mortem examination was conducted at Sassoon Hospital, and the body was later handed over to Singh’s relatives, police said. An accidental death report has been registered in connection with the incident. “At this stage, it cannot be decided whether it was accidental firing or suicide. The probe is underway,” the senior police official said.
Earlier, on September 1, a service personnel posted at the tri-service training academy was found dead on a railway track between Khadki and Shivajinagar in the city, officials had said.
