3 bodies exhumed in Assam’s Sribhumi for DNA sampling of missing Tripura teacher
Guwahati, Sep 16 (PTI) Three unidentified bodies, buried nearly 15 years ago, were exhumed on Wednesday in Assam’s Sribhumi district for DNA sampling as part of the investigation into the disappearance of a Tripura school teacher in 2011, police said.
A team of Tripura police was present during the exhumation, along with officials from the Sribhumi district administration.
The school teacher, identified as Ashish Som, was missing from Agartala since 2011, and his family filed a missing-person complaint.
During the investigation, allegations emerged that he had been abducted and that his family had been asked to pay a ransom of Rs 25 lakh.
Police later suspected that he may have been killed after the ransom was not paid.
The three unidentified bodies were exhumed following an order from a Tripura court to take DNA samples from the remains to determine whether any of the bodies is that of Som.
The samples will be matched with DNA collected from his family members in Agartala.
An unidentified body was recovered around the same time in 2011 from the Son Beel area of Sribhumi district and buried after legal formalities were completed.
Officials said that, according to reports, three unidentified bodies were buried in the area around that time.
All three graves were opened for forensic sampling as investigators could not establish which of the three might contain Som’s remains.
The identities of the remains – and whether any belong to the missing teacher – will be confirmed only after the DNA test results are received, the official added. PTI DG DG RG
