New book delves into how Partition, suffering and migration shape a family.

New Delhi: Ranbir Sidhu’s No One Gets Out of Here Alive is a memoir about family, migration, Partition, memory, and loss. The book opens with the deaths of Sidhu’s mother and father and explores the parts of their lives beyond being just his parents. His mother was born near Lahore, which became part of Pakistan during the 1947 Partition in which she lost her home and family history. The family later migrated across countries, including India, Kenya, Britain, and the United States, carrying the effects of displacement and trauma with them.

His father’s emotional distance and traditional ideas about masculinity and family pushes Sidhu to examine his complicated relationship with him. As his mother becomes ill and dies, followed nine months later by his father, Sidhu reflects on grief, memory, and the difficult legacy families pass between generations. Instead of blaming one person for the difficulties, he sees his family as an interconnected system shaped by history, suffering, survival, and love. The memoir ultimately shows how personal identity and family history are deeply connected to larger events such as Partition and migration.

Ranbir Sidhu is a British-Indian author and writer known for his fiction, essays, and non-fiction. Through his writing he explores themes such as migration, identity, family, sexuality, displacement, violence, and the experiences of Indian communities across different countries. He has authored eight books including Deep Singh Blue, Dark Star, Night in Delhi, Our Cities Are Not Your Cities, and No One Gets Out of Here Alive. His work has appeared in various international literary publications, and he has received recognition such as the Pushcart Prize and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
