Money Indian content creators are making

For India's growing army of YouTubers and Instagram creators, views and followers may bring attention, but they do not automatically translate into a large income.

“Globally, over 3 million channels participate in the YouTube Partner Program,” said YouTube, adding that YouTube has paid out over $100 billion to creators, artists, and media companies globally over the past four years.

The Google-owned subsidiary said its creative ecosystem contributed more than Rs 16,000 crore to GDP and “supported over 930,000 full-time equivalent jobs, according to Oxford Economics.” It also said it distributed more than Rs 21,000 crore to creators, artists and media companies in India between 2022 and 2024.

But how much does a creator actually make from views?

There is no fixed rate. YouTube's RPM, which is revenue earned by a creator per 1,000 views, varies according to factors including the viewer's location, advertising demand, content and whether a view is monetised. YouTube's monetisation system also includes advertising, YouTube Premium, Shopping, memberships and fan-funding features.

This means one million views do not have a standard rupee value.

The difference between India and wealthier advertising markets is also important. YouTube says advertising rates can vary by viewer geography because advertisers compete differently in different markets. An Indian creator with a largely Indian audience therefore cannot assume the same advertising return as a creator whose audience is concentrated in markets such as the US or UK.

YouTube's response said its Partner Programme offers “Ads, YouTube Premium, YouTube Shopping and brand partnerships”, alongside fan-led features including “Channel Memberships, Super Thanks, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and gifts powered by Jewels”.

Influencer Marketing Hub’s July 2026 analysis estimates typical YouTube creator RPM globally at around $1–$30 per 1,000 views, with some high-value niches reaching $20–$40 or more. However, these figures are not specific to India, and are not official YouTube rates.

For Instagram, the picture is different. Meta does not have a universal YouTube-style advertising revenue-share model for ordinary Instagram views in India. Brand partnerships and commerce are important routes for creators, while Meta's monetisation products and eligibility vary by market and creator.

A recent example is Flipkart Group's June 2026 partnership with Meta. It enables creators to discover and tag Flipkart and Myntra products through affiliate integrations, with Instagram planned as the next phase after Facebook.

That reflects a wider shift towards creator-led commerce. Kofluence estimates India's influencer-marketing spend at around Rs 3,500 crore in 2026.

The wider creator economy is considerably larger. A Boston Consulting Group report estimates India has 2-2.5 million monetised content creators influencing more than $350-400 billion in consumer spending, with creator-influenced consumption projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030.

Yet the money is unevenly distributed globally. CreatorIQ's 2026 research found that 67% of creators earned less than $10,000 from content creation over the previous year, while content creation was not the primary source of income for 62%. Its separate compensation report found that the top 10% received 62% of total creator payments in 2025, while the top 1% received 21%.

For Indian creators, therefore, views are only the starting point. Advertising, sponsorships, affiliate sales, shopping, memberships and other commercial activity can all contribute to income.
