Case against Shiv Sena corporator for assaulting man over objectionable Facebook comment
Police have filed a case against Shiv Sena corporator Hemlata Singh after a man claimed she assaulted him over an objectionable Facebook comment in Maharashtra's Palghar district.
Police in Maharashtra's Palghar district have registered a case against Shiv Sena corporator Hemlata Singh for allegedly assaulting a man over an objectionable comment on Facebook, officials said on Tuesday.
The case was filed at Tulinj police station, while Singh and other key suspects are absconding, police said.
Police also registered a cross-FIR in the matter and arrested Dharmendra Vishwakarma, the man who complained of the assault, and Manish Singh, who was described as an associate of the corporator.
Hemlata Singh is a corporator of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation and represents ward number 18 in Nalasopara.
According to police, the case stems from an objectionable comment posted on Facebook by Vishwakarma. In his complaint, he said a man named Arjun Dubey called him to a hotel.
When he reached there, Singh and her associate Amrish confronted him. The FIR said they pushed and slapped him and beat him with bamboo sticks.
The FIR also alleged that during the assault, Vishwakarma's gold chain was snatched and his smartphone, valued at about Rs 20,000, was stolen. Police said further investigation is under way.
The incident comes days after another attack in Palghar in which a group assaulted staff at a private hospital over the treatment of an injured Govinda who had taken part in Dahi Handi celebrations.
Shiv Sena Palghar city chief Rahul Gharat was arrested in that case, which took place on the night of September 5 and 6, and another 14 people, including Shiv Sena MLA Rajendra Gavit's son Rohit, were arrested on Friday.
Earlier, on July 6, Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation in Thane district and his associates were accused of assaulting doctors and other staff at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli over an alleged delay in treatment.
A case was registered against Mhatre and four others under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on charges including assault, causing hurt, unlawful assembly, rioting, criminal intimidation, intentional insult, outraging the modesty of a woman, and obstructing public servants from discharging their duties.
