India's campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya got off to a difficult start on September 17, with the men's doubles teqball pair of Declan Marshall Gonsalves and Mohamed Anas Imran Beg suffering defeats in both their group-stage matches. The opening day also saw the women's cricket competition begin, with Bangladesh advancing to the semi-finals after its quarter-final against China was abandoned due to rain, while Pakistan edged past Thailand by three wickets to book their place in the last four.
Gonsalves and Beg were India's only athletes in action on the opening day and their two defeats brought their teqball campaign to an early end, while India's women's cricket team will begin its campaign against Japan in the fourth quarter-final on September 18.
India's men's double teqball campaign ends in group stage
Gonsalves and Beg began their men's doubles campaign against Vietnam at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center. The Indian pair fought hard but lost both games 10-12 and 8-12.
They returned to the court at 1:00 PM IST for their second and final group-stage match against South Korea. However, they suffered another straight-game defeat, going down 4-12, 7-12.
With two defeats from two matches, Gonsalves and Beg could not progress to the knockout stages, bringing India's sporting action on September 17 to an end. India's next event will be on September 18, when the women's cricket team faces Japan in the quarter-finals.
Women's Cricket: Bangladesh, Pakistan through to semis
The women’s cricket competition also got underway on September 17, with Bangladesh taking on China in the opening quarter-final at Korogi Athletic Park. However, the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled after rain left the playing conditions unsuitable. Under the tournament rules, Bangladesh progressed to the semi-finals by virtue of its superior T20I ranking.
Bangladesh will now face the winner of the quarter-final between India and Japan in the semi-final on September 20. India are scheduled to play hosts Japan in the fourth quarter-final on September 18.
Pakistan women secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 Asian Games after edging past Thailand by three wickets in a rain-shortened quarter-final in Nagoya on Thursday.
Put in to bat first after Pakistan won the toss, Thailand posted 91/4 in their allotted 11 overs. Nannapat Koncharoenkai top-scored with a composed 49 off 38 balls, hitting seven fours, while captain Naruemol Chaiwai provided a late boost with a 10 off three balls.
Fatima Sana led Pakistan's bowling effort with 2/22 from three overs, while Nashra Sandhu claimed one wicket.
Pakistan's chase got off to a steady start through Gull Feroza and Shawaal Zulfiqar, who put on 42 runs. Zulfiqar struck 25 off 14 balls before Thailand fought back with wickets at regular intervals.
However, captain Fatima Sana's 21 off 13 balls and Tuba Hassan's 13 off seven kept Pakistan in control. Eman Naseer and Umm-e-Hani then completed the chase, with Pakistan reaching 92/7 in 10.4 overs to seal a three-wicket victory.
