East Zone enjoyed a brilliant run in 2011-12 and 2012-13, winning consecutive Duleep Trophy titles. But then came a 13-year-long lull. Although they won the 2014-15 Deodhar Trophy and 2016-17 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which had moved to become a zonal competition then, the Duleep Trophy remained elusive before Ishan Kishan & Co. broke the rut.
East Zone came into the final after thrashing North-East Zone and Central Zone, and then put on a massive first-innings score in front of South Zone, which was tough even for the likes of an in-form Devdutt Padikkal and Tilak Varma to go past.
